Laurelwood Organic Portland Roast Espresso Stout
I’m not usually a big fan of coffee beers, so we’ll see how this one compares. This beer features 2-row, C-60, Carafa, and Chocolate malts with roast barley, Nugget and Cascades. The coffee from Portland Roasting is an organic Guatemalan and Ethiopian blend.
Stats:
American Stout. 6.3% ABV. 34 IBUs. Oregon.
Very dark brown, essentially black in color. Fantastic tan head.
Nice coffee aroma. Not as harsh and vegetal that I often get in coffee beers. Obviously, it dominates the nose.
Mouthfeel is pretty solid. It’s a little bit lighter on the body than I would prefer. Medium carbonation.
Lots of that coffee beer flavor up front. That’s usually the flavor that I’m not a huge fan of, but this beer manages to actually taste a bit like a cup of coffee on the mid-palate with a dash of sweetness. The finish is quite nice with a vanilla roasted coffee flavor, but the malt finally makes an appearance on the backend as well with a hint of chocolate.
Generally not a huge fan of coffee beers but I’m liking this one more than most. 89 points.
