Belhaven Wee Heavy

Scotch Ale in a clear bottle. This is already getting off to a bad start. If you know me, you know I’m not a big fan of Scotch ales as a general rule. They tend to be obnoxiously sweet. The clear bottle is usually a bad sign for any better, but let’s give it a taste.

Scotch Ale. 6.5% ABV. Scotland.

Really nice shade of a dark red/brown color. Nothing too special about the head.

Lots of sweetness and caramel on the nose. Some red fruits also make an appearance.

Surprising amount of carbonation with a medium-light body.

Lots of caramel, just a little bit of sweetness. Vanilla comes through with a little bit of bitterness to balance out.

I generally hate Scottish ales, but this is lovely. Not nearly as sweet as I thought it would be. It has a nice balance and fairly easy drinking. 90 points.
