Pelican Bad Santa

Santa has been very bad, indeed. This black IPA features Pale, Melanoidin, and Dehusked Black malt with Magnum and Fuggle hops. Let’s give it a sip.

American Black Ale. 6.7% ABV. 70 IBUs. Oregon. Winter Seasonal.

Quite dark drown. Looks like a porter. The tan head springs up.

Hoppy nose, but surprisingly fruity. It’s got this raspberry jam thing going with with a hint of chocolate and pine. Maybe a slight hint of mandarin orange there, as well.

Mouthfeel is quite nice. Medium-high body with low-medium carbonation.

Hops first with a slight floral characteristic and hint of orange and grapefruit. Then the darker malt comes through with a bit of nutty, roasty quality. Good length, with a nice balance of bitterness.

It’s a nice beer, but doesn’t strike me as hoppy enough for a black IPA. It’s more of a hoppy porter with a big mouthfeel feel and quite a bit of those dark malts coming through. I definitely recommend it, though. 89 points.
