Jester King Black Metal

Here’s the last Jester King from Texas that Ben sent me. Thanks again, Ben! It’s a Russian Imperial Stout with their farmhouse yeast strain, sounds interesting. This beer features Pale, Black, Chocolate, Caramalt, Brown, Carafa, Dark Crystal and Roast Barley with Millennium and East Kent Goldings hops.

Russian Imperial Stout. 9.3% ABV. Texas.

Very dark brown to black in color. Really pretty dark head, but it does fade away fairly quickly.

It’s got some chocolate, a little bit of chocolate, and a nice chocolate component. Other than the chocolate a little hint of apple, black pepper, and vanilla.

The mouthfeel is perfect. Big and inky but has just enough carbonation to keep it from being syrupy.

Chocolate (of course), black pepper, vanilla, honey, tobacco, and roasted malt. Hits all the right bases. The finish is lovely without being overly roasted. Just the right amount of bitterness to the sweetness. It’s big and bold without needing to punch you in the face. The length is ridiculous. Did I just eat a chocolate truffle?

Excellent. I don’t know what they are smoking over on BA with this only getting an 86. I imagine that because it doesn’t rip your tongue out and assault your face that it’s somehow a mediocre beer. Great balance, great complexity, with all your imperial stout flavors hit. 92 points.
