Southern Tier Backburner

This New York barleywine features 4 hops and 2 malts, but the brewery website doesn’t even list which varieties. I’ve had this one a couple times in the past and been shared with friends. The oak gives it a nice smoothness and a creamy flavor.

Barleywine. 9.6% ABV. New York. Limited Release.

Dark caramel in color. It’s got a lovely, tight-laced head.

Lots of that oaky aroma coming through with a bit of wood and butter with that dark fruit and sweetness from the beer.

Mouthfeel is big, silky, and smooth.

Oak, butterscotch, plums, raisins, and brown sugar. It’s sweet and it’s oaky, and it just barely contains the booze.

It’s hard to not like this beer. The oak rounds out all the rough edges for an easy drinking barley wine, but has the structure to age with the best of them. 92 points.
