Boulevard Rye-on-Rye

This is a limited release from the Smokestack Series. This is the kind of beer that my “beer guy” doesn’t even put on the shelf. If the name didn’t give it away, it’s a rye beer aged partly on rye whiskey barrels, Templeton Rye to be exact.

Rye Beer. 11.0% ABV. Missouri. Limited Release.

Dark copper to red in color. The head is low and loose, but it tends to stay on top there.

The nose brings some malty-ness and caramel with a hint of that spicy rye. The alcohol comes through a bit…well more than a bit.

Mouthfeel is lovely with a medium-full body with that bottle conditioned spritz.

Caramel, vanilla, rye, and alcohol all come through on the palate. The more I’m drinking this, the more the alcohol is bothering me, which is interesting.

It’s a well made brew that could stand to use some aging. It’s not my favorite, but it’s tasty and brings that lovely rye flavor out more than any rye beer that I’ve had. Keep in mind, though, that this is NOT rye bread rye. It just doesn’t hit the palate with as much focus as it does in a beer. If you can find/afford it, I’d recommend, but I wouldn’t say you should feel bad if you can’t. 90 points.
