Foggy Noggin 2012 English Old Ale

Here’s an interesting beer from an interesting brewery. This is one of Washington’s nano-breweries, and they actually seem to be doing well. This beer is called an English style old ale, and has a relatively low ABV compared to most that I’ve seen in the style. It’s got a simple ingredients list with only Maris Otter and Crystal 77 malts with Goldings hops.

English Old Ale. 6.8% ABV. 55 IBUs. Washington. Limited Release.

Caramel brown in color, with a heavily carbonated head that fades very quickly.

You get some sweetness and caramel on the nose. Caramel apples mix with a grainy-malty aroma. This actually smells beautiful.

Mouthfeel is full bodied with low carbonation.

Caramel, honey, and apples all collide on the palate with just a bit of hop bitterness to balance. This beer has some sweetness, but it’s quite well contained so it’s not cloying at all. Vanilla bean and malt stick onto the palate for dear life.

This is a tasty, tasty brew. Everything here has a nice balance. They suggest aging it, but it’s lovely right now. 89 points.
