Guinness Black Lager

Well this is Guinness’ newest creation, a black lager. I do love a good Schwarzbier, but I’m afraid this is going to be a Guinness Light or something along those lines. The marketing says it’s Cold Brewed with Roasted Barley. I’m not really sure what they mean by cold-brewed, unless they are referring to the fermentation/lagering temperature, in which case, just about all lagers are cold-brewed.

Schwarzbier. 4.5% ABV. Ireland.

Dark brown in color, a bit darker than a Coke. The head is off-white and loose, and goes away very quickly.

It actually does smell like a Guinness with some roast barley, chocolate, and coffee coming through.

Mouthfeel is extremely light with very high carbonation. Think Bud Light.

Roast barley and chocolate hit the palate first then turns to water on the mid-palate. Tiny bit of bitterness on the back with a very short finish bringing just a hint of sweetness and roasted barley.

Well, it’s been awhile since I’ve panned a beer on this blog, but here we go. This is shit. It’s a watered down Guinness for people who think Guinness is too heavy. I would much rather drink Guinness Draught. 74 points.
