Schell’s Stag 4 Burton Ale

I was lucky enough to get this beer because I have some cool friends. Thanks Frank! This is number 4 in the Stag Series. This is referred to as a Burton Ale, which Schell’s explains is a forgotten English style of beer. This has Maris Otter, a couple different British Crystal malts and torrified wheat. Nugget and Goldings are the hops and they add Turbinado sugar and Dark Candi Syrup.

English Strong Ale. 8.0% ABV. 60 IBUs. Minnesota. Limited Release.

Dark copper to ruby color with a fantastic head and lacing.

The nose is a bit closed, but I’m getting a bit of sweetness with some caramel and brown sugar with just a hint of Crème Brulee.

Mouthfeel is huge. Full bodied with a surprisingly prickly carbonation.

Caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, dates, raisins. Quite sweet and a little bit of heat. Long finish of caramel and vanilla.

Like the Wee Heavy, this isn’t a style of beer that’s a favorite of mine. That being said, it’s executed very well. Amazing body with great balance and a dessert like characteristic. Tasty. 90 points.
