American Breakaway IPA

I’ve finally got a bottle of Skip Madsen’s Breakaway IPA. I’ve only had this beer at a beer festival, so I was pretty excited when I found out that American was going to bottle. Now that I can finally sit down with this beer, let’s see how it is.

American India Pale Ale. 7.2% ABV. 90 IBUs. Washington.

Golden to light copper in color. It has a nice head that lasts.

It’s a hoppy nose, but the malt really jumps out. It’s almost bready with a floral hop profile and a dash of honey.

Mouthfeel is a light medium body and medium carbonation.

Malty up front but has some floral and earthy hops that follow. Honey comes in near the backend and it leaves a bit of bitterness on the palate with a long, grainy finish.

I think this is going to go down as a classic of the state. It’s aggressive at 90 IBUs, but manages to still be fairly balanced. 90 points.
