Goose Island Pepe Nero 2011

Goose Island has the best labels ever. This is a Belgian farmhouse ale brewed with black peppercorns. The beer has Pilsner, Rye, Crystal Rye, and Black malts with Pilgrim and Saaz hops.

Farmhouse Ale. 6.0% ABV. 30 IBUs. Illinois.

Dark brown to ruby in color with a carbonated head that loosens quickly.

Great nose. It actually smells a lot like a wine. It’s also got some cocoa and vanilla mixed in with some spices. Probably one of the best aromas ever.

Nice mouthfeel, it’s actually less carbonated than I expected, but good body.

Spices, smoke and cocoa up front and a little bit of vanilla and rubber on the mid-palate, and then transitions to an almost tart peach. The finish is a bit lacking but I like the apricot flavor that I’m getting.

I think it’s just a bit underwhelming. I love the flavors, but they are just too light. 89 points.
