Surly Four

Thanks again to @13mikey for another Minnesota brew. This Anniversary beer from Surly is a “double espresso milk stout”. Surly doesn’t have it listed on their website, so I’m not sure what malts or hops are used.

Milk Stout. 10.0% ABV. Minnesota.

Very dark brown with a dark tan head.

The coffee comes through a lot on the nose, but doesn’t come across as stale as I normally expect in coffee beers. This beer also brings a lot of chocolate and sweetness. There’s also a slight wood characteristic with honey and vanilla. Lovely nose.

The mouthfeel is huge. This is as thick as they come. (Calm down Mikey).

Coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, honey, oak, BBQ spice, and some molasses. A ton of flavor on this beer, but it’s almost too sweet and that sweetness lingers on the palate. The coffee is heavy, but tastes fresh, not stale.

This is a big beer and one that’s in the dessert beer category for me, due to the high amount of sweetness. Pretty damn tasty though. 92 points.
