21st Amendment Hell Or High Watermelon Wheat

One of the bigger players in the canning craze, this wheat by 21st Amendment has watermelon puree added to a secondary fermentation. This beer features, other than the watermelon, 2-row Pale and wheat malts with Magnum hops. I’m always weary of fruit beers because of the general lack of complexity and over-the-top fruit flavor that kills the rest of the beer, but let’s see how this one plays out.

Fruit Wheat Beer. 4.9% ABV. California.

Light yellow color, but very hazy with sediment. No head or lacing.

So the nose is sweet, with watermelon coming through. Very candy-like though. And yeah…

Light mouthfeel with fairly high carbonation.

This tastes exactly like a watermelon jolly rancher, with just a hint of bitterness (because it’s a beer, after all). Ends kind of watery. Maybe just a little bit of wheat flavor, but not that much, the watermelon masks it all.

The review for this beer is short, because there isn’t much to say. It’s a sweet, light flavored, fruity beer. It’s lame to me, but I can see some people liking this (ie. The macro crowd, and some ladies). As a beer though, I think it kinda sucks. I might as well be sucking on a jolly rancher, all sweet, and no complexity. 78 points.
