Redhook 8-4-1 Expedition 2010

The idea behind the 8-4-1 is kinda cool. There are 8 brewers who work in 4 teams of 2 to create 1 beer. Each team’s batch is then blended together to make 1 beer. This beer is an imperial brown ale that features Pale, Wheat, Munich, Caramel, Chocolate, and smoked malts with Alchemy, Cascade, Willamette, Crystal and Sterling hops. It also includes honey, candi sugar, and brown sugar (that’s a lot of sweetness), with added oak chips.

Imperial Brown Ale. 9.5% ABV. 55 IBUs. Washington. Spring Release.

A brown, caramelized color with not much head at all.

Really closed nose. I get some wood, vanilla, and alcohol. Frankly, that is about it.

Light to medium bodied, way too light.

There is shockingly little flavor here. To me, this tastes like cardboard. I get some wood notes and some vanilla, same as the nose. The finish completely dies and you are left with a tad bit of bitterness and alcohol.

This is surprisingly bad. Shockingly bad, actually. With as much ingredients and effort put into this, there really is no reason this should taste like nothing. 77 points.
