Sierra Nevada Bigfoot 2010

This is the 25th release of Sierra Nevada’s famous barleywine, Bigfoot. This beer is brewed with Two-Row and English Caramel malts. It uses Chinook hops for bittering, Cascade and Centennial for finishing, and then they dry hop it with Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops.

Barleywine. 9.6% ABV. 90 IBUs. California.

Nice appearance. Dark coppery with sediment. Beautiful head and lacing.

The nose is sweet malts. Some vanilla, orange, pine and not much else. Pretty closed nose.

Medium to full bodied, quite thick in the mouth but the carbonation gives it a little spritz.

The palate is much better than the nose. Definitely that sweetness comes through with the malts. This take is quite hoppy with pine coming through. This beer actually reminds me a bit of the Celebration Ale, which does use similar hops. I really love this apricot flavor that rides throughout the whole palate. The citrus tends toward the middle, but there is a really nice grapefruit component on the backend with quite a bit of bitterness and pine.

Very nice beer, and again, it’s hard to review barleywines when they are fresh. It’s like reviewing a really young wine. I am keeping a bottle of this, so we will see it again in about a year or so. But good beer, and you should pick some up before they are all gone. 90 points.
