Lagunitas Olde Gnarlywine
I’ve only had a few Lagunita’s beers, and I’m not sure why that is, just always managed to pass them up. But here is a beer that is a seasonal, and just got into my local beer store, so I thought I would give this one a try. Again, this is a barleywine, so I’m not reviewing it at the point that it should be (with a few years under it’s belt). The breweries website doesn’t list the malts or hops on here.
Stats:
Barleywine. 10.85% ABV. 69.39 IBUs. California. Released January.
Dark coppery, to mahogany color. Alright head and good lacing.
The nose is actually very hoppy with a lot of pine and citrus coming through. Malts do come through, as well, with a bit of sweetness and brown sugar/molasses. A lot of caramel and fruit come through. Sort of a caramelized fruit dessert with brandy over the top.
Medium to full bodied, and not too much carbonation.
A lot of hops up front, giving it an almost spicy taste. A lot of spices come through with some dark fruits and apples. I do get citrus and quite a bit of sweetness. A bit of earthyness and bitterness on the back. It’s sweet, but ends pretty dry.
Not too bad, but very young beer. Needs to be laid down awhile, but good potential. Let’s go with 90 points.
