Stone Arrogant Bastard

This is a pretty iconic American craft beer. I kind of think of this beer as a challenge to the consumer. The back label says that you probably won’t like this beer. “It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate and ale of this quality and depth,” it reads. It goes on to talk about the marketing campaign’s, and lack of quality in macro-beers. This is also kept under wraps a bit by Stone. The IBUs and the hops are kept classified.

American Strong Ale. 7.2% ABV. California.

Dark brown, with reddish hues, pretty red looking actually. Fantastic head that leaves lacing on the glass.

Very hoppy nose. A lot of grapefruit on this one with some more citrus fruits coming through. I also get just a bit of vanilla here, as well.

Pretty thick stuff and low carbonation.

This is essentially a hop bomb. Hops are gonna beat your palate to death. Lots of grapefruit and citrus up front, and some piney notes, especially near the back end. There is quite a serious amount of bitterness here. There are some malts, as well, which keep the beer balanced.

So, as the bottle says, you probably aren’t going to like this (unless you are a beer geek of course). This is a serious beer though, and it’s surprisingly balanced, but there is a ton of bitterness here. This is well-made, and I recommend it, but only if you can handle some serious hops. 90 points.
