Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale

This beer is brewed year-round in limited quantities. It has Chinook bittering hops, and Amarillo and Simcoe for the aroma and dry-hop.

Black IPA. 8.7% ABV. 90 IBUs. California. Limited Release.

It looks like a porter, very dark with just a reddish hue. Nice head that doesn’t seem to go away, with pretty good lacing as well.

The nose is incredibly hoppy. This smells like an imperial IPA. Lots of citrus, especially grapefruit on the nose.

Decently carbonated, and good medium bodied mouthfeel. Again, feels like an IPA.

The palate is all hops again with grapefruit all over the place (I’m talking a glass of grapefruit juice here) with some other good citrus notes. Some pretty serious bitterness on the back end and a little bit of roasted coffee on the finish too.

Very interesting beer. It’s more like a black IPA than what most ASAs are. So if you are into really, really hoppy imperial IPAs, then you will like this. But it’s a bit off balance for my liking. Very little notice of the alcohol though. 88 points.
