Russian River Pliny the Elder

I really don’t know anything about the hops in this beer. The breweries website pretty much sucks. But this beer, if you haven’t heard of it, is one of the most sought after beers in the US. It’s pretty hard to find, and is considered to be one of the best in the world.

Double India Pale Ale. 8.0% ABV. 100 IBUs. California. Bottled on December 08, 2009.

Orange, coppery in color, and pretty hazy with a fantastic head, and fantastic lacing.

Very hoppy on the nose, with a ton of citrus coming through, very prominent grapefruit. The malt backbone comes through, as well, with some caramel action. I also get this cheddar cheese thing on the nose.

Medium bodied with good carbonation, pretty silky mouthfeel actually.

Lots of that hop character up front with the citrus and pine. Lots of grapefruit and other citrus fruits. I do get some of that cheese component, which I think might have something to do with the yeast. Good apple flavors that begin in the mid and roll through to the end. Quite a bit of pine of the back end too. I get some spice on the back end too. Bitter, but not over-bearing, quite balanced.

Very well balanced with great complexity. They don’t get too much better than this, and if you can find it, you gotta try it. 93 points.
