Deschutes Black Butte XXI

Deschutes Black Butte XXI

This is another reserve series beer from Deschutes. This is a take of their famous Black Butte Porter. This beer is brewed with chocolate from Seattle, locally roasted coffee, and then some of it is aged in Colorado Whiskey barrels. This is the second time they have brewed this. The XX was released last year to celebrate their 20th anniversary.

Porter. 11% ABV. 55 IBUs. Oregon.

Stout colored, with a head that actually doesn’t last super long, but keeps lacing up.

Very, very robust nose. I get a pot of black coffee, with bourbon, vanilla, and chocolate. I don’t know what it is, but I keep getting this like jalapeno thing on the nose as well, and a little tobacco. This smells like a drunken night out. I like it.

Full bodied, with just a little carbonation.

So again, a lot of coffee, bourbon, vanilla, and chocolate on here. Not so much the jalapeno, but I get a dirt component on the back. Kinda weird, I know. And a little smoke on the back end.

Kind of a cool beer. Very robust, and I don’t think a lot of people are gonna be into this. And this is another beer that needs to be laid down for a long time. I’ll go 92 on this one.

What beers are you aging right now?
