Deschutes Green Lakes

This amber from Deschutes is brewed with 5 kinds of organic malts with Liberty and “Salmon-safe” Sterling hops. Apparently, this is the first beer brewed with “Salmon-Safe” certified hops. I’m not entirely sure what all goes into being “Salmon-Safe”. But according to a press release, “To qualify for certification from the nonprofit Salmon-Safe, hops growers meet rigorous conservation requirements, including finding natural methods to control weeds and pests, protecting steams and wetlands, planting cover crops on fallow fields to prevent erosion and runoff, and reducing irrigation water use”.

Amber Ale. 5.2% ABV. 45 IBUs. Oregon.

Coppery, red colored. Head doesnt last too long.

Malts coming through quite a bit. A bit of caramel, and sweetness. There is a kind of a grape candy component. Also, Lemon-limey. The hops are along for the ride too. Some pine thrown in here. Nice nose.

This is actually a bit chewy with lower carbonation.

More hoppy on the palate, with a bit of bitterness, but not too much. Balanced with some carmalized malts, giving it just a bit of sweetness without being bothersome. That citrus component runs through to the palate.

A solid brew. Let’s go 88 on this. I like it quite a lot, but it’s not gonna change my life, but definitely something I would recommend if you are a fan of ambers or want to start trying to get into more hoppy beers.

I enjoy a hoppy bear, so I’ll have to add that to the grocery list for the wife. Can you buy just the hops out there?

You know, I’m not sure if you could just buy the hops. It’d be interesting to see if you could buy some for home brewing.
