Full Sail Grandsun of Spot IPA ’09

This is a reserve IPA from the folks at Full Sail. They use Columbus hops in here, which are primarily used as a bittering hop, which is probably why this weighs in at 100 IBU’s, wow! The hops are balanced with Munich and Honey malts.

India Pale Ale. 6.0% ABV. 100 IBUs. Oregon.

Very coppery in color, great lacing, head doesn’t last too long though.

Hoppy, of course, but still quite a lot of malts on the nose of this. I’d say this is a bit more East Coast in style, especially for Full Sail’s lineup. Very piney, and not super citrusy. Oddly I get kind of a like a roast malt sort of nose. I get a little bit of caramel coming through, and a little bit of like a chocolate/orange candy, which I’m kinda liking. But I definitely get some like, forest floor after a rain storm in my glass. A little banana and vanilla in there as well.

Higher on the carbonation side, but a fairly medium body.

Caramel, banana, vanilla, pine, cocoa powder, orange, and shit ton of bitterness on this one.

Malts come through, which I like, and I wish they would tone down the bittering hops a bit. Slightly unbalanced, but not a bad effort. 88 points.

Question: simple one today, what beer have you been enjoying in the last two weeks?

Boddington’s Pub Ale. I love that stuff. That and several White Russians.
