Old Speckled Hen

One of the many beers now owned by Greene King, Old Speckled Hen is a malt driven english pale ale. The name came from a car, believe it or not, that the MG factory used for the business. It used to get parked outside of the paint shop and tended to get splattered with paint, which earned the vehicle the nickname of “Owld Speckl’d Un”. When the brewery decided to create a beer for the 50th anniversary of MG, they called the beer Old Speckled Hen.

English Pale Ale. 5.2% ABV. England.

Reddish, coppery color with an everlasting smooth head.

All malts in the nose. Reminds me a lot of the boddington’s nose. Lemon coming through strong, with a pretty fruity, fragrant nose.

A nitro mouthfeel, very smooth, but thinner than most. Easy to drink

Very, very malty. Vanilla, lemon, cherry, a lots of other fruity flavors on the palate. A strange bitterness on the back end that i’m not liking, though.

All in all, i think this is a good beer. It’s so malt driven, so don’t try it if you’re not into that. I do not like the odd bitterness on the back, though. 86 points.

Lots of people claim to be “hopheads”, but are you a “malt-head”?
