Spaten Optimator
Just the classic Spaten doppelbock. Again, no info about this before, because it’s a secret or something.
Stats:
Doppelbock. 7.2% ABV. Germany.
Winter warmer color, dark mahogany, with a head that disappears quickly.
Really crazy nose. It’s really bready and grainy, but also a lot of spices. I also get this grape candy flavor, pretty wild.
Actually pretty full bodied with a carbonation bite.
The palate is essentially the nose, that bready, yeasty, grainyness thing is the overrriding flavor. Pretty interesting beer. I still get that artificial grape flavor, and a bunch of spices, namely cloves and nutmeg.
This beer is very strange, but it’s growing on me. 87 points.

I’ve been wanting to try this beer but have been scared away by the green bottle…Do you think it affected the quality of the beer in any way?
Thanks for the comment, man. This bottle actually wasn’t green so I can’t speak to that. I’ve only seen it in the green bottles online. I’m thinking that it might be green bottles in the sixpacks. But if you can find it in a bomber form, pick that one up.
This beer works great for broasting fish. Had the head chef at Islamorada suggest it and it was phenomenal. The beauty is, you can drink what you don’t cook with! Used tilapia the first time, but any white fish would taste great.
I would have never thought as a doppelbock as a beer to make fish with.
Interesting.
I love the style & think the history of why they’re named the way they’re named is pretty cool too.
It’s too bad February’s Beer Club (bocks) was the smallest meeting yet, we had some good beers.
